High Anxiety: Getting to WRTC Posted: Jun 28, 2006 08:51 PDT
Some months ago, I bought tickets to/from Florianopolis on Varig airlines. And we intend to travel around to several places in Brazil after WRTC using, you guessed it, Varig.
Now many of you know that Varig is in desperate financial straits. They have recently canceled hundreds of flights, particularly international flights, where they fear that their airplanes will be seized for non-payment of leasing fees.
Of course, Varig is "hopeful" that someone will buy them out, and sink some money into the operation to get the whole fleet back flying again. As an added attraction to this little melodrama, there are literally thousands of Brazilians in Germany for the World Cup, and they need to get back home to Brazil too.
Whatta mess! By declaring that they intend to fly again, Varig is holding up refunds of tickets such that it is dicey (or at least very expensive) to buy tickets on other airlines, but that is just what some WRTC competitors and referrees are doing.
Stay tuned; as the Chinese saying goes, we are blessed to live in an "interesting" world.
