The Bataan Death March Posted: Jul 10, 2006 10:13 PDT
At 08z we go into the Bataan Death march. The rate slows, many CQs, S&P, the minutes drag by. The noise on 80m is horrible; S7/the band scope on the Pro II looks like a tall field of wheatgrass; signals are weak and it’s a major, major effort to copy call signs at the B station. I see John with his eyes closed; one hand supporting his chin, the other slowly moving the tuning knob as he looks for new Qs/mults on Radio B. The musical cw notes of ‘CQ test PW5F PW5F’ becomes a white noise, I am finding it harder to concentrate, my neck is tired, I will just lean my head back and..….next WRTC I WILL confiscate all digital cameras prior to the start!
Conditions improve as we approach sunrise. Jack is on 40cw cqing and using the sub VFO of the MP to look for Qs up in the ssb portion. He is a superb operator and I watch as he deftly works his frequency on both VFOs. At sunrise, 20m comes alive and the sprint to the finish line starts. The boys alternate between ssb and cw and are rewarded with some good stuff; 9V, a bunch of JAs and DU9RG swing by for mults and HQs.
They finish with good rates for the contest and a feeling that they did their very best. I totally agee….more later.
